The stylised painting of the Queen sat on a pony while her father looked on also prompted her to say: "That's a funny colour for a horse".

The painting by artist Nicole Leidenfrost was given to the Queen from German president Gauck (as tradition demands) as she and Prince Philip received a ceremonial welcome in Berlin.

President Buhari set to remove oil subsidy

President Buhari plans to totally remove fuel subsidy and use the proceeds for the provision of free and compulsory primary/secondary education across the country. The administration is also said to be working on unbundling the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to make it more efficient in the production and delivery of products to Nigerians.
These proposals form part of the strong recommendations made by the transition committee raised by Buhari to work out a blueprint for his administration.
Asked if the proposal for total subsidy removal had been discussed with labour, the source said that members of organized labour in the country were consulted by the committee and they made presentations on what should be done over the matter.

The source said:
“ Labour is part of the decision; they have accepted the proposal of fuel subsidy removal. “A committee is likely to be set up by the federal government to work out the modalities of what is to be done in that respect. “But the truth is that total removal of fuel subsidy has been recommended with adequate provisions for palliatives on free education and social welfare for the unemployed”, a member of the transition committee said.
The source pointed out that unlike in the past, the Buhari administration is considering the provision of free meals for students to serve as incentives for them to enroll in school.

Caitlyn Jenner: Cops revisit case, gives it special attention

Caitlyn Jenner is under criminal investigation for her fatal car crash in February, and we've learned prosecutors are putting Jenner under a special microscope ... a microscope normally reserved for murderers, kidnappers and extortionists. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. is a couple of weeks away from completing its investigation. The Sheriff would then normally send the case to the D.A.'s closest satellite, which in this case is Van Nuys. But law enforcement tells us the D.A. has quietly told the Sheriff that the case will be sent to the big guns at the main office in Downtown L.A. ... in the Major Crimes Unit.   The Major Crimes Unit deals almost exclusively with extremely serious felonies. Think of the way the Navy SEALs are to the Navy. But Major Crimes will be reviewing Jenner's case, and one law enforcement source connected with the case calls it "surprising." Law enforcement sources familiar with the case feel Jenner should not be charged with a crime at all ... Jenner wasn't texting or on the phone ... it was momentary inattentiveness that ended badly.

Kendall Jenner still calling Caitlyn Jenner 'He'

Kendall Jenner made 3 interesting choices -- grammatically speaking -- when it comes to talking about her dad, Caitlyn Jenner ... and it raises a complicated issue. Kendall was speaking to an E! reporter in NYC about Caitlyn's docuseries, and said ... "I think that he can honestly do so much good with everything and I'm excited for it. If he's excited, I'm excited for him." Based on the clip, it's hard to tell if Kendall meant to use female pronouns and slipped up (no biggie, everyone's done it) -- or if she's just continuing to use male pronouns for her father.  Remember ... Caitlyn told the kids, "You can call me dad." So, is it ... 'She's my dad' or ... 'He's my dad?" Head-scratcher.

Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday commenced probe of the administration of his predecessor, Chibuike Amaechi as he constituted a seven man Judicial Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice George Omereji to investigate alleged sale of some state assets as well as the projects for which funds were allegedly released but not executed.
The Judicial Commission of Inquiry which has 23 terms of reference has one month to turn in its report.
Wike’s action was coming against the backdrop of claims by Amaechi’s former Deputy, Tele Ikuru that the former administration under which he served was the most corrupt in the state.

He further directed the Commission of Inquiry to investigate the expenditure of N96 billion from the Rivers State Reserve Fund without compliance with the extant laws as well as make appropriate recommendations that would assist the state government recover proceeds from the gas turbines sold by the former administration.
Furthermore, the commission also has the mandate to recover alleged funds wrongfully disbursed on the failed Justice Karibi White Hospital; the alleged funds illegally withdrawn from the state’s Reserve Fund and the alleged N2 billion illegally disbursed under the Agriculture Credit Scheme.

He said : “ I am confident that President Buhari will support my administration in the quest to tackle the massive corruption that characterised the Amaechi administration.
“We are aware that the immediate past administration and her officials will resort to blackmail and propaganda for the purpose of diverting attention from their corrupt practices. We shall remain focused on the task of getting back Rivers State resources and assets.”

Nigerian film makers have been given another opportunity to participate in the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, otherwise called The Oscars. This was announced during the week by the Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee,NOSC.
The NOSC, in a statement, said that as preparations for the 2016 edition of the Hollywood laurel show begins, film submissions are welcomed from Nigerian film makers living in Nigeria and Diaspora, for the Foreign Language category of the Oscars.
The competition which invites films of all lengths and genres will open for submissions from June 16 to July 6, 2015.

US Bishops resign in child sex abuse scandal

Pope Francis on Monday accepted the resignation of two U.S. bishops on Monday, 10 days after a Minnesota prosecutor filed criminal charges against their diocese for failing to protect children from a sexually abusive priest.

Archbishop John Nienstedt of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and one of his deputies, auxiliary Bishop Lee Piche, resigned over their links to Curtis Wehmeyer.

Wehmeyer, who has been dismissed from the priesthood, is serving a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2012 to criminal sexual conduct with two minors and possessing child pornography.

The pontiff accepted the resignations the week after approving an unprecedented Vatican tribunal intended to judge bishops for covering up or failing to report sexual abuse, which has caused worldwide scandal for more than a decade.

Minnesota prosecutor John Choi brought the charges against the archdiocese on June 5. Hundreds of civil cases have already been filed against it for allegedly failing to supervise priests or ignoring sexual abuse by the clergy.

Anne Barrett Doyle of BishopAccountability.org, an independent group that helps tackle the issue in the Catholic Church, said the resignations were “disgracefully overdue.”

“Today’s news from Minnesota is a sobering reminder that the real source of accountability in the Catholic abuse crisis continues to reside outside the church,” Doyle said.

“Nienstedt and Piche would still be in power if not for (Choi’s) recent indictment of the archdiocese.”

Nienstedt said he was leaving because his leadership had “drawn attention away from the good works (of the Church).”

“I leave with a clear conscience knowing that my team and I have put in place solid protocols to ensure the protection of minors and vulnerable adults,” he said in a statement.

Piche said people of the archdiocese needed healing and hope. “I was getting in the way of that and so I had to resign,” he said in a statement.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), called for a detailed investigation of the alleged cover-up.

“There were dozens of Church staff who could and should have stopped many of these abusers’ crimes by simply calling 911. But they protected themselves and their jobs by staying silent. They too should be ousted by the Vatican,” SNAP said.

Choi described “a disturbing institutional and systemic pattern of behavior” stretching back decades at the highest level of leadership in the archdiocese, which has 187 parishes and 90 schools.

On Monday, Choi said in a statement that while the resignations were an affirmative step, the criminal investigation continues.

“As we have said, the goals of our actions are to hold the archdiocese accountable, seek justice for the victims and our community, and to take appropriate steps to ensure that what we have alleged and intend to prove about the past conduct of church officials will never be repeated,” Choi said.

Victims told investigators that Wehmeyer gave them beer and marijuana or cigarettes, showed them pornographic images and touched their genitals in a camper parked on parish grounds or while camping, according to the complaint.

He is also awaiting trial on charges of assaulting a third child.

The archdiocese was charged with three misdemeanor counts of contributing to the need for protection or services for the minors who were the victims of sexual abuse and three misdemeanor counts of contributing to the minors’ delinquency or status as juvenile petty offenders. The archdiocese also faces a related civil complaint.

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Bernard Anthony Hebda of Newark as apostolic administrator to run the archdiocese until a new archbishop is appointed.

South Korea continues to battle MERS outbreak; Saudi Arabia reports 5 cases

(CNN) -- Seven new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, have been confirmed in South Korea, the country's Ministry of Health said Sunday.

Officials in Busan, South Korea's second largest city, reported that a person suffering from MERS died Sunday. If confirmed by the Ministry of Health, that would bring to 15 the number of deaths attributed to the virus. At least 10 people have recovered after being infected and 120 are under treatment, the ministry said.

South Korean health officials this weekend said the outbreak there was slowing, but additional cases were expected.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has recorded five cases of MERS in the past week, the official state-run Saudi press agency said Sunday, citing a weekly Ministry of Health statement.

According to the World Health Organization, the strain of coronavirus that causes MERS was first identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia.

In Seoul, Samsung Medical Center -- one of the city's hospitals that has counted many of the nation's MERS cases among its patients and visitors -- announced Sunday that it will suspend all surgical procedures except for emergency surgery "to fully focus on responding to MERS."

More than 50 confirmed MERS cases have been traced back to the medical center, according to the center's website.

"We sincerely apologize with our heads bent to the people for causing great concern as Samsung Medical Center became the center (of) the spread of MERS," hospital President Song Jae-hoon said.

Exactly a month ago, a South Korean man walked into a hospital complaining of a cough and fever.

The 68-year-old patient, who had just returned from four Middle Eastern countries, went from facility to facility before getting properly diagnosed. He would become "patient zero" of the country's outbreak.

The outbreak has sparked international concern, shuttered nearly 3,000 schools in South Korea and stalled the country's economy. So far, 2,854 people are under quarantine, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Many schools were expected to reopen Monday, but at least 440 were expected to remain closed.

South Korean health officials said last week that would be crucial in the battle to contain MERS, as many of those in quarantine were nearing the end of their mandatory isolation period.

Your blood could save someone with a life threatening disease

With blood donors in serious decline for a decade, NHS Blood and Transplant now needs 204,000 new volunteers to come forward in England and North Wales this year to keep blood stocks at a safe level for the future.

Donated blood can be used to help save lives in different but vital ways. As well as being crucial for emergency situations and during surgery, donor blood is needed for patients with cancer and for people with blood conditions, including sickle cell disorders and thalassemia.

These diseases are more prevalent within the black and South Asian communities, in which some blood types are more common and some rarer sub-types only found.

To highlight the challenge, each month hospitals request between 3,000 to 4,000 units of red cells to meet the needs of sickle cell patients.

While the NHS is always able to provide suitable blood for patients, there are certain sub-types among sickle cell patients that they can only fully match half of the time. June 14th is celebrated all over the world as World Blood Donor day, please let us join hands to make blood donation a reality.

7 things to talk about in a healthy relationship

Communication is the key to a healthy relationship. However, many people aren’t certain what they should be communicating about. Spend time talking about a variety of topics to grow together as a couple and to prevent your relationship from becoming stale.

1. Your Daily Activities

All of your conversations don’t have to be earth shattering. Spend time talking about your day-to-day activities. Discuss what time you woke up, what you ate for lunch, or what you discussed with a co-worker and help your partner understand what happens when you’re apart.

2. Money

Talk about your budget. Discuss your saving and spending habits. If you combine your finances, set some financial goals and discuss strategies to help you reach those goals.

3. Places You Want to Explore

Start a conversation about the places you’d like to visit. Whether you want to travel to your grandmother’s house or you want to go on a cruise around the world, a discussion about travel can spark a lot of new conversation.

4. Emotional Growth

Share some information about your emotional growth. If you notice you’ve become wiser, less reactive, or more compassionate, share that with your partner. Point out the emotional growth you see in your partner as well.

5. Individual Goals

It’s healthy to have individual goals. Whether you want to lose weight, learn how to prepare Chinese food, or learn how to line dance, set some goals for yourself and discuss those goals with your partner.

6. Spiritual Beliefs

10 wounded, vehicle damaged as Okada operators, ATMA clash

No fewer than 10 persons sustained injuries, while a pick-up van belonging to Anambra Traffic Management Agency, ATMA, was damaged, yesterday, following a clash between officials of the agency and commercial motorcycle operators, who resisted the former from impounding their motor-cycles.
The motorcycle operators, otherwise known as Okada riders, had earlier in the day, protested efforts by officials of the traffic agency to enforce the restriction ban placed on their operations on major roads in Onitsha and other major cities in the state by the government.
ATMA officials had as early as 10a.m. mounted strategic points at major roads in Awka, interdicting the Okada operators and discharging their passengers.
What would have resulted in a blood-bath between both parties was averted by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Inland Town police station, who personally led his men to disperse the invading Okada operators.
The DPO said: ‘’I got a distress call that some recalcitrant Okada operators had engaged the ATMA officials, who have been directed to impound disobedient Okada operators in a battle, following the seizure of their motorcycles.
“I immediately mobilize my men and we went there to quell the attack, but before we could get there, they had already smashed the windscreen of a pick-up van belonging to ATMA, no life was, however, lost but people must sustain injury when such a thing happens. We have actually taken control of the situation.’’
One of the angry Okada operators, who spoke with Vanguard, accused ATMA officials of beating them up before seizing their motorcycles.
But an ATMA official, who pleaded anonymity, in a swift reaction, denied the allegation, saying the agency officials could not have beaten up the Okada operators in the presence of policemen, who were monitoring the situation.

Five arraigned over Kenya University massacre

Kenyan police have arraigned five men in connection with the attack by the armed group al-Shabab on a university in eastern Kenya in April in which 148 people were killed.

The five men pleaded not guilty to 152 counts of committing acts of terrorism in a Nairobi court on Thursday.

Four al-Shabab gunmen stormed the Garissa University College at dawn on April 2. The attack went on for hours before it was finally ended by a specialised police unit and the four men were killed.

The prosecution alleges that the five suspects colluded to carry out the attack, but have not said what their roles were.

Prosecutor Daniel Karuri urged the court to deny the suspects bail.

Magistrate Daniel Ochenja directed that they be imprisoned until June 11, when the court will determine whether they will be granted bail.

The five suspects complained they were tortured for 10 consecutive days as anti-terrorism police tried to force confessions from them.

Speaking through an interpreter, the four Somalis and a Tanzanian claimed their heads were forced into buckets full of water, and that they were electrocuted and whipped after they denied involvement in the attack.

Al-Shabab has vowed to carry out attacks against Kenya for sending its troops to Somalia to fight the armed group.

Pakistani cleric claims women who wear Jeans cause Earthquakes

Politician Maulana Fazlur Rehman has commanded the military to take action on “immodest women”, who he blamed for recent terror attacks.

Ulema-e-Islami Fazi leader Rehman also said that women who wear jeans are responsible for rising inflation and other disasters, according to reports.

He demanded that uncovered women wear sacks and stay inside their homes – so the Taliban doesn’t attack Pakistan.

He said: “The Taliban are our brothers and their angst against the state is justified.

“As brother Ansar Abbasi has so eloquently put in the past: TTP’s suicide bombings are just Allah’s wrath upon us.

“And so there is a need to earmark and eliminate the real enemy of Pakistan: every woman who wears jeans.”

Clerics in the Middle East have recently made a string of bizarre proclamations recently.

Islamic police in Iran banned spiky hair over claims it is linked to “devil worship”.

And an Islamic scholar reportedly issued a command that women owe their husbands sex at all times – even when riding on camels.

Mandela grandson sentenced to 2 years in jail for assault

[_] Nelson Mandela's oldest grandson, Mandla Mandela, has been sentenced to two years in prison or pay a fine of $817 for assaulting a school teacher in 2013.

Mandla, who is a legislator for the ruling AfricanNational Congress (ANC), was found to have attacked a teacher, Mlamli Ngudle, in a 2013 road rage incident in Mthatha, Cape Province, South Africa.
The prosecutor said Ngudle had allegedly bumped a parked vehicle belonging to one of Mandla's friends.

Some witnesses said Mandla threatened Ngudle with a gun.

The prosecutor said even the court in Mthatha during the trial confirmed that the legislator was arrogant and evasive during his testimony.

He said the legislator had been found guilty of assault in March.

Mthatha made headlines in 2013 when a judge ordered him to return the remains of his father and two other children of Nelson Mandela to Qunu, their ancestral home.

He had moved them to a memorial centre in another location without consulting the family.
